After the very successful exhibition „skateboard fever“ in December 03 the media team „FauxAmi“ made it possible to keep the exhibition going in the Filmhaus Stuttgart. That means Stuttgart – South of Germany – has the first skateboard museum in all of Europe!
Since the opening in March 05, the museum presented the moving, diversified and also controversial history of skateboarding. Skateboards and everything regarding the sport is being illustrated - from the first rollers with metal rolls and roller skates to the first real skateboards that were still influenced a lot by surfing to the flashy eighties and nineties that were inspired by graffiti, music, videos and graphic design to the boards from today.
Exhibited are the collections of the FauxAmi, the ex Santa Cruz pro Matthias Bauer, Urban Supplies, the ex Zorlac European Team manager Pom Fritz and boards of many collectors from all over Germany. The expo shows many exhibits that have never been seen before, hundreds of skateboards and everything related from 1920 till today as well as the technical development of the skateboard, the social development of the sport and the influences of the skaters on contemporary art and literature.
From being a social outsider to being big companies’ darling skaters are a multilayered community. The museum wants to show both – the skateboard and the people behind it. For many the skateboard still means a loud toy for kids. For others it is a piece of sports equipment and for others again it stands for freedom, a medium to express oneself creatively and a special lifestyle. From the first self sawn boards in father’s garage skateboarding has developed to be a lifestyle as well as a multimillion dollar business. At the museum you can look at the skateboards and experience their stories.
Open every Sunday from 4 PM to 9 PM. Admission free!
