Surfing as we know it today goes back further than we imagine; early references date back to the year 1900. Initially reserved for the bravest men, in recent years women have moved from being 'the girlfriend on the shore' to professional surfers who demonstrate their courage and skill on a daily basis and are comparable to the more traditional male figures.

They are also part of the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals), an organisation born during the 1970s to represent and take care of the interests of professional surfers. In spite of not having the media support of other mass sports, surfing has huge numbers of enthusiasts. It is a serious professional sport which has provided history-making symbolic figures such as Tom Curren (sponsored by Rip Curl), an experienced surfer who has become a legend.

Rip Curl has faith in Spanish waves and includes Spanish beaches in its official calendar of events. It is due to this prestigious brand that in September Santander will play host to the world of women's surfing; a WCT event at which the best 16 women in world surfing will come head to head. In addition, it will also host the Rip Curl Pro Junior championship: the opportunity that Rip Curl provides for girls of up to 21 years of age to compete in the finest surfing events. The Cantabrian capital will also host a multitude of free activities and shows, all related to women's surfing: yoga courses, surfing classes, a tandem surfing show (a stage of the world competition), guided tours of the Liencres nature reserve and, the main attraction, two days of the best live music.

Rip Curl, a pioneer in the manufacture of boards and technical equipment, organises the main and most prestigious events in world surfing. Following its instinct for success, the brand is a firm supporter of female surfing stars and believes that women are the future of a constantly evolving sport. Rip Curl has a team of sportswomen whose careers it sponsors unconditionally. Pauline Ado (France), Jessi Miley (Australia), Julia Christian (US), Casandra Castaño (Spain), Garazi Sanchez (Spain)… all of them will be in Santander from 1st to 9th September. For them and their increasing numbers of fans, Rip Curl improves, extends and creates new product lines, including accessories, footwear, clothes and swimsuits.
